Meet the Orthodontists

Dr. Stebbins

Dr. Michael P. Stebbins

It is so rewarding to see our young patients grow and mature, and to watch as adult patients finally achieve the smile they’ve always wanted. My goal is to help everyone achieve the most aesthetic and functional result possible, in order to keep their teeth for life.

My staff and practice have been part of my life for many years. Without them and our wonderful patients, we would not have had the success and enjoyment that we have experienced over the years. I am truly lucky in that aspect. An old saying is “the harder you work, the luckier you become”; my staff and I have worked very hard over the years to build the reputation of a caring office that provides excellence in orthodontic care. We hope you’ll join us and see for yourself!

Education and experience

Although I was born in Anchorage, Alaska, I am a fifth-generation Montanan, and raised on the family homestead in the Flathead Valley. Early school was at Egan, which later became Fair-Mont-Egan. I attended Montana State University, where I received a Bachelor of Science.

I earned my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Washington University Dental School. I served in the Navy Reserve, and during my dental school training I participated in a rotating externship at Great Lakes Naval Hospital and Newport, RI.

After graduating from dental school near the top of my class, I spent three years in the U.S. Navy stationed in Morocco and San Francisco. I went on to complete my orthodontic residency at the University of the Pacific and returned to practice in the Flathead Valley.

Professional affiliations and continuing education

Since the orthodontic field is constantly changing and evolving, I further my education annually to stay current on the latest orthodontic trends and developments. My involvement in many professional organizations provides me with many new opportunities to learn and interact with my peers as well. My affiliations include the:

  • American Association of Orthodontists
  • American Dental Association
  • Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists
  • Montana Society of Orthodontists, past president
  • Montana Dental Association

In addition to these memberships, I am a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. I was the first graduate from the University of the Pacific to attain this honor. I was also involved with the board in developing the national AAO recertification program for orthodontists.

Outside the office

I am so proud of my two grown children. My oldest, Jennifer, has a master’s degree in mental health/family counseling and is married to my associate. They have three children. My son Jonathan and his wife, Martha, live in Seattle. He has degrees in sports management and recently graduated from law school. He is currently in the restaurant business in Seattle.

Time away from the office is usually spent in activities related to soccer. I run a two-week soccer camp in the summer, where we bring in top-level coaches from around country. The camp is a nonprofit, with monies going back to support the soccer community. Find out more at www.flatheadsoccer.com.

Personally, I enjoy traveling, but also the satisfaction of farming. Having grown up tied to the seasons and a farm, it is almost second nature by this point. Our family farm is not big, but it provides personal satisfaction in seeing things grow and seasons change, and offers a wonderful place to live.

I love the energy and enthusiasm our patients bring to the office. It’s so interesting to hear about all the different activities they are involved in, from sports to dance, to speech and debate. Their lives are full of excitement!

I was proud to join my father-in-law, Dr. Michael Stebbins, and the rest of the Stebbins Orthodontics team in 2010. Our team is made up of some of the most caring people I know. They’re always truly interested in knowing our family of patients, and ensuring they have an exceptional orthodontic experience. I look forward to celebrating the gift of a smile with our team and our patients for many years to come.

Education and experience

I was born in South Korea and moved to Iowa when I was a year old. We eventually moved to Washington state, where my parents found new jobs. I attended the University of Washington and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in international studies and biochemistry and a minor in chemistry.

While at UW, many of my hours were spent as a student leader with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and as a campus staff member. Upon graduation, I majored in courting Jennifer Stebbins, whom I later married. With an acceptance letter to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, we newlyweds were off to Boston.

While working toward my Doctorate of Dental Medicine in Boston, I was active with the Alpha Omega dental fraternity and participated in events such as Tooth Day at Fenway and free dental screenings at the Special Olympics. During my senior year at Tufts, I spent time working at St. Joseph’s Hospital Pediatric Dentistry Clinic in Providence, RI, graduated summa cum laude, and was inducted into the national dental honor society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon.

Following my dental education, I decided to specialize in the field of orthodontics, and attended the University of Colorado, where I served as president of my class and received my certificate in orthodontics and a Master of Science in dentistry.

Outside the office

I enjoy traveling and have served on short-term missions in Malaysia and China. In my leisure hours, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing and watching almost any sport, increasing my knowledge of trivia, and sharing the deliciousness of Korean cuisine.

Jennifer and I have three children: our Boston-baked bean, Ella, our mile-high mountain man, Jon Tae, and our local Kalispell kid, Keenan. We feel truly blessed to be able to raise our children in such a wonderful community.  If you see us out and about town, feel free to say hello. We always enjoy meeting people!
